and the countless hours that PPHS volunteers spent researching (without the internet!) the family tree and historical information about James and Catherine Hughes Castello.

As best can be determined, the Castello family that eventually lived in Florissant, Colorado had its beginning in Gerona/Girona Spain about the 1720’s. Juame Castello Sr was and iron miner in the Ribest de Freser  Gerona, Catalonia, Spain. Click on the Iron and the Forge button below for more information on the iron mining in Spain.

He was also interested in the mining of lead and copper in southwest Ireland so when he died in 1776, their son Juame Jr headed to Ireland in July 1776. Juame Jr settled in County May near Kilkelly where Hugh O’Brien controlled the Castello holdings. Mr. & Mrs. Hugh O’Brien’s daughter, Anne, brought smiles to Juaume’s heart so his stay in Ireland became life changing in several ways.
